  • Drivers Licensing Exam
Nickerson High School provides a Kansas State Department of Education (KSDE) approved Classroom and Behind-The-Wheel Driver's Education Program for all interested students who are age 14 or older. This program meets Kansas Department of Education regulations and insurance industry requirements.

Classroom Instruction:  Students will need to achieve 80% mastery on tests for course requirements.  On-line chapter tests are open book.  Students are encouraged to do the chapter reviews at the end of the units to help prepare them for each test.  All tests need to be completed before taking the final.  The final exam will not be an open book test.

Driving:  Students will drive with a partner or individually with the instructor.  Driving times will be arranged with the instructor and student.  Times for driving will be after school in the evenings or on weekends.  Students must complete a minimum of 5 hours behind-the-wheel instruction and meet all driving competencies.

Enrollment Fee:  Payment of $100 for in district students and $150 for out of district students is required at the time of enrollment and reserves a spot in the class.  Payment plans are available through the USD 309 District Office, if you would prefer to pay on a monthly basis. Scholarships may be available based on need. Enrollment is first come/first serve.  Because instructor time is limited, only a limited number of slots are available for each session.

If interested, complete the enrollment form and return it to the Nickerson High School main office. For more information or questions, please contact Brad Kelly at (620) 422-3226.

USD 309 Teacher Selected for Presidential Award in Mathematics
Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching
Kansas 7-12 Mathematics Awardee

Mrs. Trissa McCabe

"Being recognized for the Presidential Award of Excellence gives me a moment of pause. As I reflect on the students, staff, and administration that have guided my path thus far, I am thankful for their support. This award validates my efforts, but it is also a tribute to my students. For it is my students that motivate me in my passion for teaching mathematics. This award has created reflection and innovation as I prepare for future learning opportunities."

Trissa McCabe, an educator since 1995, teaches 8th grade mathematics at Reno Valley Middle School where she has taught for 15 years. Previously, Trissa taught Algebra I and 7th grade mathematics for six years.

Trissa engaged with the Common Core early on by creating a flexible curriculum that centered around learning the “why,” behind the mathematics and not just the “how.” She continues to serve on both the Building and District Leadership Teams, where she plans and supports goals to promote student learning.

Most recently, as the Lead Math Writer for the consulting firm Cross and Joftus, Trissa created a 5th through 8th grade mathematics curriculum to align with social justice themes, such as freedom and voice, for an afterschool program. Other achievements are a published lesson in the Mathematics Teaching in the Middle School Journal and being named the Kansas Technology Rich Classroom Teacher of the year. She has received training in Engineering by Design to help promote STEM education and cross curricular lessons. Trissa has also presented at a variety of conferences regarding technology and mathematical pedagogy.

Trissa earned a B.S., cum laude, in elementary education from Kansas State University and a M.S. in curriculum and instruction from Wichita State University. She is a certified kindergarten through 8th grade teacher with an emphasis in mathematics.
