NES NEWS
On Feb. 15, NES students participated in their 2nd "Jump Rope for Heart" fundraiser.  They collected $10,718, essentially doubling the amount raised last year!  The rewards were having Mr. Theis dress up in a full length formal dress, and Mr. George having his mustache shaved by the top fundraiser (Tiala Price). In addition, students who raised at least $80 were invited to a school lock-in to celebrate with food, games and movies.

DISTRICT News Desperado for a Good Cause Mar 5, 2008
Midge Simmons, Terry George, Troy McChristian, Supt. Jerry Burch and Vince Naccarato serve time in jail to help raise money for the Muscular Dystrophy Association.

Desperado for a Good Cause

From behind bars, USD 309 Superintendent jerry Burch pleaded for help. Thankfully people listened. After several hours at the Muscular Dystrophy Association lock up, at Dillon Nature Center, Feb. 7, Burch and an administrative team of four others were bailed out of jail having raised $1,394.83 for MDA.

"Our group did pretty well," Burch said. "The last time we only made a couple hundred dollars."

This year Burch began campaigning early asking staff for help. So they were able to receive pledges before being arrested by Hutchinson fire fighters, then taken to the Dillon Nature Center where they were booked. Bail was set at $1,600.00, but USD 309 came pretty close. And they were eventually set free.

Reno Valley Middle School raised the largest portion of the money donated by USD 309, bringing in $730.83. Still, Vince Naccarato was handcuffed and taken away from school by a fire fighter. At the Dillon Nature Center more calls were made to raise money.

Burch considered it "an honor and pleasure," to participate in MDA's Hutchinson Hearts and Heroes to help Jerry's Kids.

"MDA serves people in our community with neuromuscular disease by providing clinics, support groups, assistance with the purchase and repair of wheelchairs, braces and communication devices, and summer camp for kids. MDA also funds research grants to help find treatments and cures for some 43 neuromuscular diseases that affect people of all ages, right here in our community," Burch said.

Here's a break down of the total money raised by USD 309:

Jerry Burch - Complex $155.00
Troy McChristian - NHS $200.00
Vince Naccarato - RV $730.83
Terry George - NE $200.00
Midge Simmons - SH $109.00

The donations raised Feb. 7 would directly help more than 400 families in central and western Kansas.

DISTRICT News Burch Graduated from Mar 5, 2008
Jerry Burch, USD 309 superintendent recently completed his participation in the 2007-2008 class of the "Leadership for Tomorrow" program, sponsored by the Kansas Association of School Boards.

KASB's emphasis for this program has been to identify exemplary school superintendents and board of education members from across Kansas and inform them on the key education issues. They provided avenues through which participants could better understand how issues impacted the state and other districts, which helped to foster future legislative advocacy.

"Involvement in this program will hopefully encourage participants to seek other leadership roles at the state and national levels," said KASB Executive Director John Koepke.

Participating in the program was a great experience for Burch.

"I would recommend this to all school board members," Burch said. The group explored a variety of school districts from the very small rural to the large urban districts. The experience emphasized the need to stop pitting business against education.

"Education is the foundation for businesses," Burch said. "We develop their work force."

Five class sessions were held across Kansas in May, July, September, December, and February. Some of the topics included legal issues, advocacy issues, local and state budget issues, special education, student achievement, technology, poverty and health issues.

DISTRICT News Nickerson Elementary School Earns Governor's Achievement Award Jan 31, 2008
Nickerson Elementary has earned the Governor's Achievement Award. To receive this award given to top performing schools in the state, Nickerson Elementary had to meet specified goals. It had to achieve the Standard of Excellence on state assessment scores in both reading and mathematics for 2007, be among the top five percent of schools in both reading and mathematics on the 2007 state assessments at the elementary level, make Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) in both reading and mathematics in 2007 and reach a desired attendance level required by the state.

NES principal Terry George explained to the board at its Dec. 10 meeting that the little things staff members do at NES make the difference.

"We have a plan to support every child to do their best and I'm proud of the teachers for their efforts," he said.

One of the steps George described involved each classroom setting achievement goals. He said this makes it easier for him to remind students of the direction they need to be heading on a daily basis.

A total of 44 elementary schools, 12 middle schools and 19 high schools across the state received the award. Nickerson Elementary was one of two schools in Reno County to earn the distinction.
